hot roast chestnuts – using an air fryer

Roast chestnuts make a nice snack or pre-meal nibble. I tried several approaches to roasting chestnuts and decided that the following is lazy enough to suit. Let’s get to it:
- put the bag of chestnuts into a bowl, pour on hot water and leave it an hour. This will soften the outside and inside skin and probably help with peeling.
- make a cut (or two) in each chestnut. This will avoid explosions and help with peeling. Experts advise on how to embellish this, but they don’t know how lazy I want to be.
- put the cut, wet chestnuts in the air-fryer and cook at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes minimum. You might pre-heat the oven if your fryer is particularly slow/low rated. I don’t and mine is 2000kW. You may extend the cooking to 12 minutes or 15 minutes for a heavier roast. With a larger batch than shown shake the oven tray midway in this case.
- peel and serve.
- to re-heat I might pour on boiling water and leave it. Or blast in the microwave for under a minute. I’ve still to do some experimentation on the timing.
